An Ode to Gemini Season

Sunday, June 1: 3 pm

Join us for an afternoon of contrast as we celebrate the month of June with the music of Beethoven and Schumann!

Listen as Carolyn Cronauer and Natsuko Yamagata play Beethoven's cheerful "Spring" Sonata in F, and be filled with a fresh sense of optimism and zest for the fullness of life. Let Schumann's Sonata in A minor and famous trio of Romances carry your imagination into the throws of passion in a way few other composers can emulate. Explore with joy of the contradictory dynamics of love, loss, euphoria, and despair through the masterful work of these two brilliant 19th century composers.

Carolyn Cronauer is a violinist and high school math teacher at Rochester School for the Deaf. When she is not teaching or practicing, she is usually spending time with her two dogs. Natsuko Yamagata is a psychiatrist in training at URMC, a classically trained pianist, and mom to a black cat. Carolyn and Natsuko are both Geminis.

Originally from Utica, NY, Carolyn Cronauer began playing the viola at age eight. As a young violist, she performed in youth orchestras, made guest appearances with local rock bands, and played in the MV4 string quartet for 10 years. Carolyn studied math at SUNY Geneseo. She eventually went on to earn her master’s degree in Deaf Education at Rochester Institute of Technology. It was during those years that she made the decision to switch her primary instrument to the violin. Recently, Carolyn has performed recitals and concerts around Rochester and the eastern US. She can often be found at Spiritus Christi Church, playing classical violin solos and gospel improv tunes with the mass choir. Carolyn spends her summers working as a camp director and playing chamber music at Apple Hill Summer Chamber Music Festival in Nelson, New Hampshire. She has had many influential teachers and musical mentors over the years, including Michael Cleveland, Brian Mohar, Linda Kirkwood, Kimia Ghaderi, Perrin Yang, and Lenny Matczynski. Carolyn has been a high school math teacher at Rochester School for the Deaf since 2017. Aside from teaching and music, she loves to read, run, and spend time with her two dogs, Aya and Dax.

Natsuko Yamagata was born in Tokyo, Japan, and began playing piano at age three. At Brandeis University, she majored in chemistry, minored in French, and studied piano with Evan Hirsch, remaining active in the campus music scene. Before medical school, she worked as a research assistant and continued performing as a soloist, chamber musician, and accompanist at recitals, senior centers, weddings, festivals, and competitions across and beyond the Boston area. Though the COVID-19 pandemic and medical school put her musical life on hold, she found fulfillment performing as a volunteer hospital musician. She’s now thrilled that her psychiatry residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center brought her to Rochester, NY- where live music opportunities abound. Outside of music and medicine, she’s a proud cat mom to Schumer-Nori (Schumie for Robert Schumann!).
